Well, here's my second go at it. For some reason my first attempt at writing this article was erased by the JU site. That was a bummer, as I was half-way done.
So tonight was the last night of the auditions. Yay! I am looking forward to the Hollywood round. As the previous season five audition shows have gone, so went this episode. A few good auditions, mixed in with a ton of lousy ones, none probably having much of a lasting impact on the fabric of Americana.
It seems that this year, the people in charge of the show have tried to "sneak" the best of the best by us, so we can "discover" them in later rounds. (ala Bo Bice last year.) With that in mind, there doesn't seem to be much of a clear-cut favorite coming out of the auditions.
With all of that in mind, here are some of the key points of tonight's program:
-
National anthem singer and basketball player Ayla Brown just barely made it into the Hollywood round. She is pretty enough, and sings okay, but she really seems to be needing something else to get herself over. Maybe she'll surprise us.
-
That Coke float commercial is really cool! I love whatever music that is that they play during the commercial. It sounds very much like a glammed-up Beatles song. Anyone out there recognize it?
-
Pretty twin Rebecca O'Donahue made it through more on looks than on singing talent. Although I imagine that some may consider it "outrageous" that this young lady could get by (mainly) on looks, I think that it is reasonable to give her a shot. I mean, being sent to Hollywood isn't the same as making it to the "studio" part of the competition. Had I been a judge, I would have said "What the hell..." and taken a chance on her. If anything, ladies viewing her at home can hate her because she's pretty. (Which reminds me: My wife had -once again- the most insightful comment regarding young Rebecca. She mentioned that this contestant was more suited for a Target ad than a singing contest. That may be true.)
-
One guy named Kevin Covais came in, sang awfully nicely, and made it through to Hollywood without a real "Idol" look about him. Clips of tomorrow's show reveal him to have a different hairstyle. That's a start... We'll see if he makes it any farther.
-
One guy sang like Cher, and another guy dressed like Clay Aiken. What else more can I say about those two guys? Underwhelming? Mediocre?
That's it for this year's Idol auditions. I hope that you've enjoyed reading what I have had to say so far. Stick with me 'til the end!
