Click here for my latest article.

Tonight's article will be a bit shorter than usual.  I had a really long two days of conferences at work, and I am looking forward to watching last Sunday's "Sopranos" before going to bed.  (Hopefully I will find time tomorrow to add to these comments...)

Tonight's Idol featured the contestants singing songs from the past 6 years.  Compared to last week's gem of a show, this week's was a bit of a stinker.  Barry Manilow must have had a great -however fleeting- influence on the performers.

The Performances:

1) Lisa Tucker sang "Because of you".  Grade: C-

2) Kellie Pickler sang "Suds in a bucket".  Grade: C

3)  Ace Young sang "Drops of Jupiter".  Grade: C-/D+

4)  Taylor Hicks sang "Trouble".  Grade: C

5)  Mandisa sang "Wanna praise you".  Grade: B-

6)  Chris Daughtry sang "What if?"  Grade: B+

7)  Katharine McPhee sang "The voice within".  Grade: B

8)  Bucky Covington  Grade: B

9)  Paris Bennett sang "Work it out".  Grade: C+

10)  Elliot Yamin sang "I don't want to be".  Grade:B

Tonight's Best:  Chris and Katharine (although nobody really shone tonight)

Tonight's Worst: Lisa and Ace

Is the song sang by Lisa Tucker 'Because of you' originally by Kelly Clarkson? Haven't seen this episode yet here in the UK. I would always think singing a previous idol song is a very bad idea because they get compared even more to the original.

The whole show was a stinker in my view.

Is that because of the singing/performance, or just generally the music chosen from the last 6 years?

You're right about the Kelly Clarkson song. It was a big risk to sing something that nearly everyone in the audience would know. If she did a great job, that would leave an awesome impression. Of course if the song didn't turn out so well, that would be a mess too. Sadly for Lisa, she wasn't able to sing it as well as she needed to.

Thanks for all of the comments, considering that this week's report was so truncated.

Ace and the scar was by far the lamest moment in AI history yet. I was really expecting a great story but he tripped while playing BBall?

I got shot in the head in a drive by. Now that is an interesting (and true) true story.

I really don't understand why they don't make better song choices...consdering that the judges tell contestants that song choice is critical every single year.
I thought Katharine was good...and although Taylor's song wasn't recognizable, he did waaaay much better than last week...good vocals. Chris needs to do some fun rock (he's been too seriously lately), and Elliot did good, too...well, at least compared to most of the other performances.
