Every year on American Idol, there are two theme nights that I enjoy significantly less than others.  One theme that I dislike is "Motown night", and the other one was tonight's theme: Country.

It looks like I wasn't alone in disliking "Country night", as a number of the contestants didn't seem to be so thrilled with the theme either.

The best news from the country world has to be Kenny Rogers.  He looks really good for a man of 68! (August 21, 1938 is Kenny's birthday.)  Let's see how he performs tomorrow.

Another bit of good news for me is that we're finally down to less-than-ten contestants.  From here on out, reviewing each show will get increasingly easy.  So with that, I give you. . .

Tonight's Performances:

1. Taylor Hicks sang "Country Roads."  I don't know what Taylor was thinking.  He picked an ordinary song, and didn't do anything special with it.    Grade: C

My favorite part of Taylor's performance was when the camera cut to a group in the crowd, while showing the caption "Taylor's Grandpa and friends."  Well, I saw two younger people who could possibly have been Taylor's friends, but I didn't see an elderly man.  There was an older woman however.  Is it possible that Taylor's grandfather is a transvestite?

2.  Mandisa sang a song that may possibly be titled "Any man of mine."  Mandisa must not be reading my reports, as she wore both jeans and a sleeveless shirt.

Mandisa sang what must be a nice country song, but it seemed that she was just trying to get through the song without messing up the words.  I'd bet that Kellie would have done a much better job with that song!  Grade: C

3.  Elliot Yamin sang "If tomorrow never comes."  I wish that the judges hadn't brought up Elliot's nervous look, because that was slated to be my most profound observation from tonight's show.

I'll say it anyway:  For some reason, Elliot looked really nervous tonight.  I wonder if he was afraid of forgetting the words.  Anyway, the song turned out alright.  The voice and the song weren't bad.  Grade: B

4.  Paris Bennett sang "How do I live without you?"  Paris had on some really cute clothes!  The beginning of this song, as well as the chorus didn't exactly sound right.  I am thinking that Paris should have sung the song a bit higher.  Grade: C

Simon had an interesting comment, disagreeing with a negative one by Paula.  I think that Simon intentionally said the opposite of what he felt just to "change things up" a little.

5.  Ace Young sang "I wanna cry."  This song sounded nice and soulful.  There were one or two rough spots, but all-in-all everything went well.  Grade: B+

6.  Kellie Pickler sang "Fancy."  Kellie was the first performer on tonight's show who actually seemed that they enjoyed the theme.  Very appropriate, well-sung song by Kellie.  I liked it.  Grade: A

7.  Chris Daughtry sang "(Unknown title)."  Chris did surprisingly well with the different genre.  He sounded like an actual country singer.  The down part about tonight's performance was that the song was a little bit boring.  Grade: B+

8.  Katharine McPhee sang the same song that Chris sang.  Katharine looked like a country singer.  The song turned out alright.  Grade: B

I wonder what Katharine has been doing to slim down since the show started.  She has been getting thinner each week.  Looked good tonight.

9.  Bucky Covington sang "Best I ever had."  Bucky sang a mellow song, but he should have picked something more exciting to end the show.  That said, the song had a couple of good spots.  Grade: C+

Tonight's best:  1) Kellie   2) Ace   3) Chris

Tonight's worst:  1) Taylor   2) Mandisa   3) Paris.  How could Paris have been so fantastic during the auditions and the Hollywood round, yet become so ordinary recently?

I thought everyone read your reviews.

I am with you on the theme nights. I don't like disco night or country night. Hopefully they won't do disco this year.

I sort of watched, last night. This year it is becoming background to whatever I am doing.

I'm with Kelly on this year kind of being in the background. I always record the show just in case there is anything that I want to see again but this year just hasn't been great or even memorable. Maybe it's just too early to expect any real excitement or it could be that we just haven't had anything to get excited about. If they don't turn this around we are going to see another winner who goes the way of Fantasia or Ruben. There will be a lot of hoopla about the winner but no real promise of a main stream career.

Now on to the show... Chris was my biggest surprise. I thought he did really well to be so far out of his element. I like Elliot (but I almost always do). I think he is the guy who is going to surprise us all. He takes instruction well and I thing Kenny Rodgers was spot on with his request for Elliot to not over sing the song. I think if Elliot finds a way to tug at America’s heart strings with a great song he is going to be the shows favorite for a winner.

Taylor was a disappointment. Ace hit a couple of bum notes at really crucial parts of the song. Mandisa was unimpressive with her Shania Twain song. Paris chose a country power ballad and did a poor job in my opinion. Bucky, oh Bucky, I thought he would shine last night but I was disappointed with his showing. Pickle was terrible. I love Reba (and I am not a big country fan). She lost me in the whole 'this is not an act' thing. I find it really hard to believe that she participated in the Miss North Carolina pageant with that silly southern drawl or the half brained comments she makes. On top of that she tried to sound just like Reba while singing this song. Blech! She is a sub par talent with big boobs and blonde hair. If she were to win, AI will loose all credibility for finding a talented performer. Pickle should stick to acting if she wants to be famous. She seems to have it down pat.

What happened to Fantasia? That was the second time that I've heard something had gone wrong with her, but I still don't know what that was. **Point two: I like disco night!

Fantasia is fine - as far as I know. She just hasn't ejoyed mainstream success like Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. She was nominated for 4 R&B Grammys. It's not like she hasn't been successful but she hasn't hit that mainstream stride like the other two.

I'm going to have to agree. This year doesn't seem to have any spark.

At first, I thought we had a very strong yet diverse lineup of talents but the more they performed the more quality they seem to lose. It might start to get interesting when we reach the final five or four.

My wife made a comment last night that struck a chord with me. She said, "All of the performances over the last several weeks have been really bland." Thinking on it, that's true. There's only been one, maybe two, stand out performances each week. And they were mediocre, at best.

Now, I usually like Country Night (and thought Katherine McPhee's performance was pretty good.) but it was just so "blah", like most of the performers were doing it 'cause they had to, not because they were enjoying themselves. Having said that ... I've got to admit that I'm a country music fan.

"Hi, my name is Chaos Manager and I'm addicted to Country Music."
"Hi, Chaos!"

Memories of Us by Keith Urban is the song that Chris sang. I was impessed that he was able to step out of his element and do as well as he did. For the most part I think all of your assesment has been acurate. Perhaps you should consider judging. You and Simon might get along well

might just be me but doesn't Paula seem extra drunk/ out of it this season?? Either she's high on life or on something else, She seems to be very loose and "happy" throwing her hands in the air, almost knocking her head on the desk..... just.... intoxicated. WHat is in that coke cup do ya think? hmmm

I commented a few times last year that Paula seemed to be under the influence of something.

Chris Daughtry sucked last night.
Simon was right when he said if you heard it on the radio would you listen?

Based on his song last night I would have turned the channel.
He is a one trick pony for rock and roll songs.

Please don't have us believe he is the only one tricker there. Pickler only has one speed ... stu stu stu stupid. She's not the only one. I would say every artist pretty much already had their genre of music.

Yeah, sadly there are no real contestants I like this year.
I loved Vonzel from last season, but this year my fav at this point is .....
Elliot

(Yes there are a lot of 1 trick ponies in the mix)

Taylor is my favorite...but he wasn't his best last night. Rumors are that he was sick and that this was a last minute song (due to the fact that his other song choices were rejected).

I thought Chris did really well...he showed another side to himself, which is what the judges wanted. Everyone else was just...okay.

Dunno who'll go home tonight...and I'm with everyone else...I'm still waiting to be completely Wowed. There's been really good performances, but none that have been show stoppers so far.
