In my 4th or 5th year of writing about Idol, (I didn't start writing about season two until really late,) the audition rounds are the hardest to write about.

Lots of the contestants at this point are either very poor, or not taking things seriously.  I don't really want to write about the never-will-bes, so I've decided to skip all but the most noticeable this year.

Out of the contestants that we saw on tonight's show, I was impressed with two of them: Jory Steinberg, and Rachel Zevita.

Notables:

Jory Steinberg: Canadian entrant who seems to have had lots of run-ins with aristocracy.  It was obvious that Jory would be a good contestant even before she opened her mouth.  Good singer, and exceptionally pretty.  One can't buy charisma like that.

Rachel Zevita: braces-wearing, opera school absconding, colorful wardrobe-wearing young lady sang three types of songs.  Despite a bit of a nip to her attitude, I found this young lady quite charming.  I'd think that she has a chance to make it past the group round, but I'd predict that she has a blowup with her teammates.  (Think Julia DaMato vs. Kimberly Caldwell.)

Sarah Burgess: auditioned against her father's wishes.  Why was she so afraid to defy him?

Amanda Coluccio and Antonello Barbu:  Once things get going, we'll be able to tell this pair of friends apart.  The tall one is pretty and sings well.  The shorter one may be good, but it is too early to tell on her.

Parts of each of these two remind me of Christopher's girlfriend on "The Sopranos": Adrianna.  They are what I'd imagine to see when someone says: "Italian girls from New Jersey."

Kia Thornton: sang an Aretha song.  Was pretty when she sings.  She may make it past Hollywood.

Jenry Bejarano: The ladies will love this guy.  Maybe that's why I don't care so much.

Porcelano Patino: Went into training to get into Idol-shape.

Christopher Henry: allegedly looks like either Simon or George Michael.  Once he started singing, I was thinking "Nathan Lane."  I liked Simon's drag show suggestion.

Christopher Richardson: I have his name written-down here, but I don't remember him at all.

Nicholas Pedro: dropped out, and is giving it another shot this year.  Paula seems to really like him.  He has a nice tone to his voice.  My suggestion for him would be to cut his hair even shorter, or to go completely bald.  Of course, what do I know?

That's it for this week.  Next week is Alabama.

After the second or third season, the auditions became my favorite part of the show.  I found the characters highly entertaining.  After not watching at all the past season, I decided to tune in last night for a bit.

Nothing really jumped out at me.  I didn't watch the whole show (I got way too bored), but was just sort of "Meh" with most.  And the really, really bad ones are no longer entertaining.  Likewise, the judges' shtick is wearing thin.  Simon appears completely mentally removed from the show, as if he really couldn't care less.  Randy hasn't seemed excited at all, and Paula, well, Paula is just sort of a wreck.

For me, at least, Idol seems to have lost most of its appeal.
