Well, tonight's show is over, It was a fun one. The theme of tonight's show was big band and swing. At the beginning of the show it was mentioned that it is too bad that John Stevens couldn't be there for "his genre." Yeah right...
Random observation: There are a few times during each season of "American Idol" when it seems that Paula Abdul is high on something. Tonight was one of those times.
The performances:
Diana DeGarmo: She sang one song that wasn't so exciting, and then followed with an exciting one. She always seems to do her best with upbeat songs. I was happy with tonight's performance. I wouldn't be surprised if she were to find a way into the top-two. Too bad that she had to go first tonight. (Grade: B+)
George Huff: This guy is in a slump. His voice didn't really fit the songs that he was singing tonight.
"What a Wonderful World" is not a giddy-happy song, it is a sentimental-happy song. George wasn't able to set the proper mood. (Grade: C)
Latoya London: Latoya sang the two best songs that I have heard on American Idol since Clay Aiken sang "Solitaire" or "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." Her look and voice were perfect tonight. (Grade: A)
Jasmine Trias: I was neither impressed nor disturbed by tonight's performance. She had the disadvantage of following Latoya, which was especially rough tonight.
My only real complaint is that Jasmine should have dressed-up a bit more to fit the theme. She had such fantastic shoes last night. (Grade:
Fantasia Barrino: Fantasia sang a cool version of one of my favorite Queen songs. (I am still hoping that they'll do a Queen or a Beatles night. ...maybe it will be a week after the Anthrax night.)
The judges were awfully impressed with her performance tonight. I thought it was fine, but it wasn't anything that she hadn't done before. (Grade:
I liked how at the end of the show, Randy included Diana among the best singers of the night. I don't think that she gets enough credit for the quality of her performances.
Jamie and Kazuko's picks:
Tonight we agreed.
Best performance: Latoya London (by a mile)
The John Stevens Award (previously known as the worst performance of the night): George Huff
