The show is over.  Diana and Fantasia were given their choice of two songs.  Each singer also has to sing a song written by former contestant, Tamyra Gray.  I am not sure whether I particularily liked the Tamyra song.  It is probably her stab at writing an Olympics 2004 theme song.  (I suppose that the song would work for that...)

In general the songs were good, and the audience was happy.  I didn't hear anything as fantastic as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" from last year, but all in all it was good.

Diana DeGarmo: To my ear, I liked the way Diana's songs turned out tonight.  I think that her best song was "No More Tears."  The judges didn't like her last song.  I think that she'll get lots of votes because she is well-rounded, cute, and is a reasonably good performer.

Fantasia Barrino: The judges criticized her first song, and then gushed over her next two songs.  (That might end up costing her votes.)

She sang "Summertime" and did a good job with the Tamyra Gray song.  The first song is a judge and fan-favorite, and the second one was solid.

Previously I had predicted that Diana would win tonight.  The lukewarm rection to her last song by the judges may have squashed her chances of winning.  That reaction by the judges may have done enough to make people forget her first two songs, which were really good.  Of course surprises can happen... Barring any surprises, I think that Fantasia will win.

Now let's see how WB Superstar USA goes...

Hmmm.  I would bet that it is on at either eight or nine Pacific.  Depends on how they do tape-delay.  I'm not all that familiar with how it's done.

Check the newspaper.

I wasn't really overwhelmed with the performances. They were both good, but some really unfortunate out of tune moments for Diana hurt the last song, which began okay and ended really well. I have said it before and I will say it again, I don't like Fantasia. Her voice is like nails on the chalkboard to me, way too nasally, and she just has way too much ego for me. Perhaps I am just trying to come up with some reason for my irrational dislike of her. Silly me.

I must admit though, I simply do not get where Simon is coming from when he says she is the best ever. She is a great performer, but her voice just isn't that good. I never went "WOW" after any of her songs like I did on a couple of occasions last year, especially with Clay. But I predict Fantasia will win pretty easily, even though she has been in the bottom group (a couple times?). We'll see.

No kidding Blue Dev.  I was actually going to write that in the body of the weblog (but I forgot.)

Fantasia the best ever?  She's good, but what about: Kelly, Clay, and Kurt Nilssen?  They are phenomenal.

I think with Fantasia is that not only is she very good at singing, she is a very good performer. She entertains the crowd and can get the crowd going. I think this is what Simon meant when he said best ever - she's a joy to watch, making it a fun evening.

She also sings extremely well, much in the league of Latoya. But unfortunately for Latoya she just sings well, and doesnt connect with the audience.

Her voice is what lets her down though, but it depends on the choice of songs. Some songs work well with her voice, while others make you consious of her voice - Donald Duck on helium? You cant really do much about voices and she does extremely well with what she's got.

I for one thinks that Kelly Clarkson is absolutely fantastic, easily winning any Pop Idol competition over her (in the UK).

I couldn't agree more! I have never understood what any of the judges see in her. I woud not buy any CD put out by her....but I would wait eagerly for the latest release from Miss Diana.

It was listening to both of them sing the same song last night that sealed it for me....Diana nailed it and made me feel the emotion behind it....Fantasia was screaming it out, and did nothing but irritate me.

To each his own, but I don't see her that way at all....she doesn't sing, she screams too many of her songs.....she doesn't entertain me, she annoys me.....she's definitely not a joy for me to watch, and I was expecting her to be gone a LONG time ago!!!

I agree that her voice is the problem....she needs to find the sort of songs that do work well for her....something like "Summertime", which I thought was her best effort all season.....and IMO, she needs to stop putting in all the "yeah, yeah, yeah" in so many of the songs....for me, that takes away from her performance in a big way.

I thihnk they both were nervous last night and I didn't "love" any of the songs either of them sang. I liked them, but not loved them.

My son voted a million times for Diana. He is in love!:
I feel sad that the show is over though. I really can't do the WB thing.

No Kidding Kelly, the last episode of the second season had much better performances by the contestants.  In my mind, nothing compares to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (by Clay) for me.

No kidding about the "Yah Yah Yah" thing.

I wrote about it earlier that I was curious about whether every song on Fantasia's first record will end with, "Yah Yah Yah Yah."  That would be nerve-wracking!
