Have you ever wanted to know how over half of the New York Yankees' starting lineup would do against the National League All-Stars?

Yeah, me neither...

Major League Baseball's All-Star Game is next week.  The starting lineup is voted on by fans in stadiums and on the internet.  Because of this voting system a lot of Yankees players are chosen.

I think that Yankees players get a lot of their votes because their team gets a lot of media coverage, and most people have at least heard of many of their players.  I think that people in the stands and on the internet have the tendency to vote for a "familiar name" rather than the most qualified player. (Living in an American League market, I refuse to vote for National League players.  I don't know them well enough to vote knowledgably.)

It would certainly be nice if the players and managers (or even sports writers) were the ones who chose the players.  Maybe "the fans" could have an opportunity to vote for three or four players (but not the whole starting line-up!)

Do any of the Yankees belong on the All-Star team?  Of course!  Mariano Rivera should definitely go.  The rest are at least debatable.

My apology, Jamie, for asking that question on my blog. Though I've been a Yankee fan for over fifty years, I'm not the obnoxious kind--I wanted them to lose occasionally out of boredom--I agree that the Allstars should be picked by players, coaches and writers as it used to be. The Yankees do not deserve to be the dominant players in the line up.

I have been watching baseball for over forty years. I don't know if that makes me an expert (and I will concede that the first 25 I watched from the Bronx) but...

Has anyone checked the standing lately?

Yankees winning percentage: .640

Next higest team in all of baseball is the Cardinals at .628. This is after the Cards went on an 8 game winning streak.

Day in and day out, the Yankees are playing the best ball.

Did you happen to see the upper deck home run that A-Rod hit yesterday? Top tier, 12 rows back. A "Ruth-ian" shot. Reggie Jackson would have been proud of that one.
Did you see Derek Jeter go into the stands last week to make that catch? He went to the hospital afterwards, but came up with the ball. That is unusual in this age of superstars with guaranteed contracts. Pete Rose would have considered that a hustle play.

The reason that baseball moved away from the earlier selection process was to make the All Star game a "fan event." I think that it is okay the way that it is.
