This afternoon as my wife and I were listening to the radio, we heard ONJ and ELO's song: "Xanadu."

That got me thinking:  In the movie "Xanadu," a downtrodden storefront album cover painter, Sonny Malone (played by Michael Beck), receives divine intervention to help open an extra-fancy roller-rink/nightclub.

Considering that that roller-rink/ nightclub opened in 1980 (the year of the film's theatrical release,) I wonder what the prospects would be of it still being open today?

I figure that there are two big strikes against the club Xanadu.  The first is that the roller-rink fad has long since passed, without a major thematic re-tuning  I am afraid that Xanadu would have seemed terribly out-of-style by 1987 (at the latest.)

The second problem is that I can't imagine what the insurance costs related to the combination of alcohol+roller skates would be.  I think that through-the-roof premiums plus injury-related lawsuits would be enough to shut the place down before 1987.

I am afraid that once again Xanadu would return to being "a place where nobody dared to go."
