Tonight "Boston Legal" will premiere on ABC.  This show is a spinoff of David E. Kelley's "The Practice."  "Boston Legal" has two of the more interesting characters on television.  I am looking forward to reacquainting myself with James Spader's "Alan Shore" and William Shatner's "Denny Crane."  -Denny Crane...

I wonder whether these two characters will eventually make it into my personal list of my favorite television characters.

Here are a few TV characters that I really like:

1) Dale Cooper (from Twin Peaks. Kyle MacLachlan):  Coop was cool, interesting, and quirky.  I remember how sad I was that he eventually "lost out" to evil-Bob in the end.  ("How's Annie?...  heh heh heh. How's Annie?...  That line still sends shivers down my spine.)

2) Fox Mulder (from the X-Files.  David Duchovny): Two B-actors playing FBI agents in-a-row.  Good writing and a good sense-of-style makes Mulder stand out.  That third season of "X-Files" was the height of the black oil/ smoking man/ clones/ killer bees/ Kryczech storyline.

3) Dr. Michael Craig (from Saint Elsewhere.  William Daniels):  What a jerk, but lovable just the same.  I never thought "Benjamin's Dad" and "Knight Rider's car" had it in him.

4) Dr. Dough Ross (from ER.  George Clooney):  Cool, caring, and competent.  It took me a few years to warm up to ER again after he left.

5) Allie McBeal (from Allie McBeal.  Calista Flockhart):  I really liked Allie's vulnerability.  She was a fun character with her inner-dialogue and interesting situations.  Too bad the show eventually imploded.

Others: George Costanza, Ted Baxter

**Did I leave anyone good off of this list?  Help me out JoeUsers!

Gotta mention Don Knotts as Barney Fife, a great comic then and now...

Let's see... My top five, off the top of my head and in no particular order, would have to be...

1. Gil Grissom from CSI. Love the show and the character. To me it is difficult to pick a favorite from the show, though. I really like all the characters. But, I think that if any single main character, with the exception of Grissom, had been pulled from the show during the first season the show would still be successful. Without him, I don't think the show would have lasted very long.

2. Fox Mulder from X-FIles. Talk about a character making the show. I stopped watching regularly during season 7 and what I caught later, I was a little disappointed in, but that may have been from not really knowing what was going on. I like the actor who played Doggett (can't think of his name at the moment), too, and probably would have liked the character more if I had watched regularly.

3. Clark Kent from Smallville. Another example of a cast that I enjoy through and through, but I really like this version of Clark. Much better than Dean Cain's character from Lois and Clark. The main problem with this show, is that my satellite system doesn't carry the local WB, so I only get to see this show in reruns on ABC Family or on DVD.

4. Homer Simpson. Ok, this one is my brain candy. I love Homer.

5. Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle. I like this character as the center of the family and he gets to talk to the audience sometimes. Also, even as the center of the show, he realizes that he's not necessarily the normal piece of this disfunctional group.

That's just off the top of my head and I'm probably brainfarting some other character. Also, a special mention goes out to Stormy Waters of Sealab 2021. I only recenlty started watching this show, but I love this character as a completely self-absorbed comedy piece. Really funny!
