I have been writing this weblog for over a year, and this is the second or third article I have written about pro wrestling.  As I was writing the title and classifying this article I was thinking to myself: "Is 'Sports Entertainment' 'Sports' or 'Entertainment'?"  This time I went with "Entertainment."  Maybe next time I will go with "Sports."

For any of you who follow wrestling closely, you may know that the WWE just cut ten of its wrestlers.  Among the characters being sent away were: Test, Nidia, Albert, Gail Kim, Billy Gunn, Johnny Stamboli, Chuck Palumbo, Jazz, and Rodney Mack.  (Wow!  I came up with nine of them off the top of my head!)

My point is that some of these cuts really stink!  Namely: Albert, Nidia, and Gail Kim.

I used to follow wrestling really closely, now I keep up with it by reading The Pro Wrestling Torch newsletter.  The newspaper is a fun, light, weekly read that keeps me up on wrestling's inner-workings without me having to watch the (increasingly boring and meaningless) shows.

Out of all the cuts however, Gail Kim's is the hardest to swallow.  Over the past year-or-so, the only reason I would turn on RAW was to see the Gail Kim match, and then change the channel as soon as it was over (or as soon as it became apparent that she wasn't going to be on that evening's show.)  Now that Gail Kim is off of the show, I have no reason to watch RAW anymore.

How disappointing...

I feel your pain. For months I've been finding it extremely difficult to even tune in randomly Raw. I don't get an UPN affiliate on my satellite service, so I don't even have Smackdown to ignore. Of the list of cut wrestlers, I knew about only three so far. While I can't find myself caring about some of them being cut, I will miss Gail Kim, too. She was one of the few stars of their women's division that I thought was really good.. Oh, well. One less reason to switch to Raw at random intervals each week...

While Gail Kim had some decent ring presence, she never really had a hook or any sort of character besides "generic new female that we push to the moon." She had those Rock-like wins at the very beginning of her "career" with WWE that did little to interest the casual viewer and lots to alienate many hardcore fans (as hardcore as fans of the women's division can get, anyway). Putting her over the established talent did more to de-push the top females they already had than to elevate her above them.
Myself, I notice that they cut both Billy *and* Chuck, but that Rico looks to still be with them. Ah, the stylist outlasts...
Nidia isn't too surprising, I suppose. Have they cut the *other* "Tough Enough" kids yet?

I really haven't been paying attention for a couple of years, really.
