How exciting!  The first night of the American Idol "voting stage" has begun.  Tonight's show featured the twelve male finalists.  After Wednesday's results show, that field will be narrowed down to ten.

As a group, this batch of contestants was extremely good.  Nearly all of the songs were at least passable-to-exceptional.

Tonight's top five notable performers:

1- Nikko Smith sang a really nice version of a Stevie Wonder song to start off the show.  I was impressed with his singing.  Judges Randy and Paula liked it a lot, but Simon seemed to think it was a bit average.  Good job Nikko!

2- Scott Savol continues to amaze us with his wonderful singing voice.  I really liked the song that he sang tonight.  This young guy is starting to grow on me.  (My wife isn't really behind this guy yet, but we'll see...)

Sadly for Scott, the judges aren't as impressed with him.  They're a bit stuck on his image, which I admit is a bit of a problem.

3- Bo Bice came out looking really cool.  (Reminiscent of the late Shannon Hoon.)  I would like to get myself that outfit that he was wearing.

He sang a really cool version of a "classic rock" song. (I don't know the title, maybe: "Drift away?")  Bo's voice sounded really cool.  I like this guy.

4- Constantine Maroulis, my favorite going into the show, gave "Kissed by a rose" a whirl.  It wasn't the best version of the song, but Constantine proved that he is a capable musical performer.  (If I can get through, I am planning to vote for both Bo and Constantine.)

Simon was right when comparing Constantine and Bo.  Simon said that even though Bo was the better singer, Constantine has more charisma.  There is something about Constantine that gets people to look at the TV to watch him perform/ talk/ whatever.  That could be called "star quality"?

5- Mario Vazquez continued to be impressive on television.  He is a good singer, performer, and he's handsome.  (I wonder if he is dealing with hairloss issues.  That's the first thing that comes to mind when someone is always wearing a hat.  Maybe he has ringworm.)

Tonight's top-three singing performances: 1) Bo Bice   2) Nikko Smith   3) Mario Vazquez

That's all for tonight.  Let's see what the women can come up with tomorrow.  (I am looking forward to seeing what Vonzell Solomon and Amanda Avila have to show us tomorrow.)

HI Jamie,
Well, Fox tried to sneak in a Monday edition. My son had to tell me it was on, so I missed the first guy.

I gotta tell you I am routing for Constantine myself. He will most definitly get the teenage girl vote. He reminds me in looks a bit like a young Peter Frampton. I guess it is the hair.

The judges were right in one thing, most of tonights songs were so boring.

Bo did a great job as well. I'm going with the rockers this week!

Okay this episode was on tonight. I was on the phone and watching McLeods Daughters but I flicked to it in the ads

I only saw the last person all the way through - Mario? - He was good. Oh and I saw someone else... Nikko - he was also good.

Then I saw the "here's the numbers again" - but the voting lines were closed OBVIOUSLY and they didn't tell us the names of the guys singing

Anyway I really liked Bo, what little 30 seconds I saw -it was Drift Away by Dobie Gray/Rolling Stones/Uncle Kracker (I love that song) and I know you've said who left but watching those performances I hope I can guess - there was an African American man with longish hair (constantine length) (not to be confused with the african american man with bo length hair) who sounded really BAD in the recap not sure if it was the mike or the editing but it was bad.

I liked Constantine in the auditions process but the 30 seconds I saw of Kiss from a Rose was pretty ugh.

I'm wondering when the girls will perform though since they're showing the verdict on Friday
