My Idol commentary is going up a bit later than usual tonight. I was in at work doing some parent-teacher conferences. Coming home to watch the show back on videotape, I was blown-away with how well the men were able to perform as a group. Tonight's show was fantastic.
There were a few downsides to tonight's show: Constantine, Anwar, and David Brown are beginning to fall below expectations. It appears that Constantine can't sing as well as expected, Anwar sounds beautiful but seems to be missing a spark, and David has had two consecutive lackluster performances. Let's hope that one of these guys can up their game for next week!
Tonight's Top-Five Performances:
1) Bo Bice was incredible! His performance tonight was one of those "videotape now and watch later moments." (Like Clay Aiken's performance of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." A few years back.) Sadly, I don't know the title of the Allman Brothers' song that Bo sang (Whipping Post?), but it was AWESOME! (please insert the title in my "comments" section.)
At this point, Bo seems to be the strongest male contestant. He has been the best dressed performer two weeks in-a-row, and he sings and performs like a pro. It is interesting how that guy "gets in the zone" to perform, as he seems to be a different person on-stage than he is on interviews.
Way to go Bo! (My wife made a comment that tonight's performance by Bo was just as good as something from a guest band on Saturday Night Live. ...However probably not Ashlee Simpson, right? Good observation!)
2) Nikko Smith was my second-favorite of the night. He sang a cool version of "Let's Get it On." Judges liked it, I liked it.
I thought that Simon's comment that Nikko looks like Bobby Brown was really funny. Good job Simon.
3) Anthony Federov slides in at number three. After what was seemingly a weak start, Anthony REALLY turned it on for his version of "I want to know what love is." My wife and I agreed that Anthony turned in a really good performance.
I would compare Anthony's voice in tonight's performance to Dennis DeYoung. That is a good thing. I like STYX.
4) fourth place goes to Mario Vazquez, who addressed the baldness issue that I brought up last week. (Coincedence?) Mario claims that he has hair, and that he'll show it eventually.
Mario sounded good like usual. I like his chances in the long run.
5) Regardless of what the judges say, I am putting Joseph Murena in at number five. Joey sang well enough, he looks cool, and I am sure that the girls love him. The only issue that I had with his version of "Let's Stay Together" were that there were too many "Whoo"s and "Let's Go"s than would seem to be appropriate for this song.
That's it for tonight, I am going to disconnect from the internet now so that I can vote for Bo about ten times before dinner.
