I have three pet hedgehogs at my house. Their names are Skippy, Yuki (brother and sister,) and MozoMozo (their mother.) They're each 2-3 years-old. They're really cute.

When I fed the hedgehogs tonight, I inadvertantly switched bowls. I put MozoMozo's bowl in Skippy's cage. Hedgehogs have a funny habit. When they find a new smell, they like to lick up whatever is making that smell, swish it around in their mouths, and then spread the smell all over themselves with their long tongues. (It is called "annoiting.")

Apparently, Skippy's sisters smell was novel enough to annoit himself with.

I took a few pictures of Skippy doing this. It is kind of funny to watch. Too bad the pictures didn't come out any clearer. If I were to turn on the lights, Skippy would run and hide (hedgehogs are nocturnal animals.)

Heres the little guy, getting the scent from the bowls.

Now Skippy is rubbing the strange smell all over himself.

Hedgehogs are so cute! I don't know much about them though. Are they pretty easy pets to care for?

They're really easy to care for. Clean up once or twice a week, feed daily, and let them run in the exercize wheel. They don't even smell... much.

The only problem is that they may be a bit squeaky when they're running in their wheels. You might need to let them run all night in a room far from where you sleep.

Another thing is that they're not exactly affectionate. They like to be alone, and they're not very smart. They're cute as all get-out though.

Can you get them inthe states?

I hear that they're illegal in California, and in one other state. (Pennsylvania?) They say that if they're let loose in the wild, they may displace native animals. They probably wouldn't survive in many places in the US besides Southern California, Florida, and the warmer spots in the Southeast though.

Other than that, you can find them in a few pet stores, plus there are a number of breeders across the country. They're really good low-maintenence pets.

I'm having trouble finding a place that sells hedgehogs in Miami. Do you happen to know of a reputable place in Miami that sells them?
