Tonight's theme was "Showtunes." I am sure that this announcement sent groans throughout the livingrooms of America, but it turned out to be a reasonably fun challenge to see the remaining nine contestants push themselves a bit in a genre that would destine many of them for failure.
Possibly the question on everyone's mind as the singing was about to start: Would Bo Bice sing "Tomorrow"?
Once in awhile Simon and Ryan take digs at each other, mainly each accusing the other of being gay. Today's quote by Simon was the best of the lot so far. After a disappointing evening of showtunes, Simon said that this would be "the last time that Ryan Seacrest will be allowed to choose a night's theme." Hilarious! The strange thing was that this comment got NO REACTION by the audience.
The Performances:
1) Scott Savol sang "The Impossible Dream." Rough week for Scott: He went on first, his song wasn't so good, and then there were those accusitions of him beating up his girlfriend a while back.
2) Constantine Maroulis sang "My funny Valentine." He chose a song where he had to "play to his strength," which is being a performer. A good song for Constantine, but whenever he goes on, I'm not expecting much anyway.
3) Carrie Underwood sang "Hello young lovers." Carrie looked like one of the Mandrell Sisters tonight. Not a bad thing, just my observation...
The song was fine, but I lost interest quickly. At least she sang the song skillfully.
4) Vonzell Solomon sang "People." (Thankfully Mikalah was eliminated before she could have gotten her hooks into this one.) Vonzell had some nice makeup on tonight. That's as pretty as she's looked so far. Her song was nice too.
5) Anthony Federov sang "Climb Every Mountain" From the Sound of Music. The song wasn't so great.
Anthony looks a bit like Ed Begley Jr. as the young Victor Erlich in Saint Elsewhere. Maybe they can get (recent birthday-boy) William Daniels to make an appearance to berate and harangue Anthony some time before he's eliminated.
6) Nikko Smith stole Mario's hat to sing "One hand one heart." I liked Nikko's version of this song.
7) Anwar Robinson sang "If ever I would leave you." My concentration drifted during this one.
8) Bo Bice ended up singing "Corner of the sky." I like his story of how he picked the song. He opened a book, closed his eyes, and plopped his finger somewhere on a page.
Considering that, this song came off quite well. Bo at least held my attention from beginning to end.
9) Nadia Turner sang "As long as he needs me." Nadia's best feature on stage is her slender body. Once Nadia's eliminated, she should try out for Vogue magazine. Tonight she was wearing a nice white evening gown. The song turned out reasonably well.
Best three of the evening:
1) Vonzell Solomon 2) Carrie Underwood 3) Nikko Smith
In trouble:
Scott Savol Anthony Federov Anwar Robinson (maybe)
