On tonight's show (the last one before the finals), each contestant sang three songs. The first song was chosen by Idol record producer Clive Davis, the second was the contestant's choice, and the third song was chosen by a judge. Once we know tomorrow's results, we will only be six days away from the grand finale where the next American Idol is named.

Each of tonight's three contestants did really well with their songs. It is safe to say that Bo Bice was by far the best, but Carrie and Vonzell didn't lag too far behind.

The performances:

A) Vonzell Solomon sang:

  1. Clive's choice: "I know I'll never love this way again." Vonzell sounded a little different than usual with this song, but it was good. She's always fine with a 70s R&B ballad to work with.
  2. Singer's choice: "Chain of fools." What I really liked about this song was that I could picture Vonzell dressed in a bath towel, singing this song into a brush in front of a mirror. Cute...
  3. Judge's choice: "On the radio." Another good one for her.

Bo Bice sang:

  1. Clive's choice: "Don't let the sun go down on me." Surprisingly Bo did as well (if not better) than Clay Aiken did with that song. A mild surprise, considering that I wouldn't normally picture Bo singing that song.
  2. Singer's choice: "Within a dream." Bo sang without a band. An interesting choice for him to help make his song memorable. I hope that that "stunt" doesn't get overdone in future seasons however.
  3. Judge's choice: "I can't get no satisfaction." Please Paula Abdul, what's with that lame-o choice? If I had the choice I'd find a better band, and have him sing "Lunatic Fringe."

C) Carrie Underwood sang:

  1. Clive's choice:"Crying" that song turned out really well with Carrie's voice.
  2. Singer's choice: "Making love out of nothing at all." I have said it before, but 1980s power-ballads are Carrie's strength. I doubt however that there is much of a market for those songs in 2005. (This may have been my favorite song on tonight's show.)
  3. Judge's choice: "Man I feel like a woman." Carrie sings her country song. Her low voice was lost in the music again.

So.... Obviously Bo goes on. Carrie and Vonzell will have to fight it out for the "runner-up" spot. I wonder whether Vonzell has gained enough fans to overtake Carrie? I kind of doubt it. What do you out there think?

Hi Jamie,

You seem to have a typo with the line 'Carrie has gained enough fans to overtake Carrie'. I assume one of them is Vonzell. It's a tough call though - only time will tell.

Thanks. I was "on the run" a bit last night, and I didn't proofread before I posted. (Although not my first typo,) That was the first time I posted an Idol article without first reading it over. Thanks.

I'm still sticking with Bo as the overall winner, and Carrie as runner-up...

Unfortunately, Vonzell compares too much with Fantasia ( I really think Vonzell is better ) but that niche is already taken.

Bo and Carrie both open up new genre's to Idol marketing....
