Today my wife and I took the boys to a small zoo in the central part of our state.  On the way home, we stopped off for a little shopping.  One of the places we went to was Barnes & Noble.  (I wanted to buy a CD.  "Teegan and Sara": "Jealousy" ...I think...)

As soon as we walked into the store, our oldest son exclaimed "choo-choo".  He wanted to play with the Thomas the Tank Engine train set that they have at Barnes and Noble stores.  (Just like he knows that he wants to see the fish whenever we go to Wal-Mart.) -The trains that they have for the kids to play with are also for sale.  They're REALLY expensive!

Our five-minute trip to Barnes and Noble dragged out to an hour-and-a-half.  Being a Saturday night, there were lots of customers.  At one point, my oldest son was one of five boys playing quietly with the train set.  It is amazing how popular those wooden train sets are for little boys.  (I think that we already know what our main activity will be for our boy's sixth birthday party!)

Kenny playing with the trains.  (The other kids had gone home for the night by this time.)

More trains.

Mommy and Daddy want to go home.  Please, let's go!

You know they have a "generic" train set with table at Target that isn't too expensive at least compared to the Thomas brand name stuff. Unless your son really cares about Thomas the train engine you could get him that. I wish I had gone ahead and gotten one for my boys when they were younger. I could have written it off on daycare. All the kids love them. There is a pretty train table in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog but it's high dollar too. Or he could just play with it when he goes to the store.

My boys always gave me the same reaction when it was time to stop playing with the trains too   They have the same train set in a department store in the mall near us.  My 5yr old always asks to go to the store with the train.  It is a nice spot to cool your heels while mall shopping.

I love to see how all the kids seem to have some unspoken code when playing with the trains.  They all just get a train part and fall in line to start playing.  You have the occasional wild one that just wants to smash the train but for the most part they play nicely.  At least that is my experience.

We have the generic Target one. It is great. Thanks for the tip anyways.
